The mandate

Make a low-speed field vehicle navigate safely and productively beside harvest crews. Own localization, route planning, motion control, obstacle handling, and recovery across repeated rows, collection points, and changing field conditions.

    Recovery paths for localization loss, blockage, wheel slip, and route changes.

    A replay and simulation workflow that reproduces field failures before the next deployment.

What you will own

  • Build and maintain localization, planning, controls, and state-estimation components.
  • Fuse GNSS, inertial, wheel, vision, and other available signals without assuming perfect sensors.
  • Define route semantics for rows, crossings, pickup points, exclusion zones, and safe stops.
  • Instrument autonomy decisions and create useful offline replay and regression tests.
  • Measure interventions, route completion, cycle time, and failure modes in production.
  • Work with perception, embedded, mechanical, and field teams on system-level fixes.

What we are looking for

  • Strong production experience with localization, planning, controls, or mobile-robot navigation.
  • Writes testable robotics software and can explain behavior from logs instead of intuition.
  • Designs explicit degraded modes for missing GPS, stale maps, blocked paths, and sensor faults.
  • Balances mathematical rigor with the need to ship a recoverable field system.
  • Can tune and debug on the machine under real operating constraints.

The field reality

The environment is part of the design.

Rows change, wheel slip is normal, people cross the route, GPS and connectivity degrade, and the field cannot be closed for a robot test. The autonomy stack must fail predictably and return control to a field operator without drama.

Useful, not required in every candidate
  • ROS 2 or another production robotics middleware.
  • GNSS-denied or partially structured outdoor navigation.
  • Vehicle dynamics, motion control, SLAM, or behavior planning.
  • Simulation, log replay, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and autonomy metrics.
